Friday Night Hot Dogs

When it comes to easy Friday night meals, my usual go-to is a pizza. Nothing beats a homemade pizza with a bit of cranberry and chicken on top, sprinkled with a good helping of tasty cheese. Well, that was until I created these yummy hot dogs! Barker’s recently sent me some of their new condiments to try out, one of which was this delicious New Yorker Mustard Relish. As soon as I saw this I thought “hot dogs” and I was pleased to see that they actually included a recipe for hot dogs in the PR release. I’ve shared some of the hot dog filling suggestions that they included below, however for my rendition of hot dogs I kept it fairly simple and let the mustard be the star of the show.

The New York Mustard Relish* is a delicious mix between, you guessed it, a mustard and a relish. With the spicy, tasty flavour of a mustard mixed with the chunkiness of a relish, this product is multi purpose.



  • Long buns
  • Frankfurters (I used Hellers ones – yum!)
  • Barkers New Yorker Mustard Relish
  • Onions
  • Tomato Sauce
  • Butter
  • Olive oil

I love caramelised onions, so I slowly fried up my onion rings in a little bit of butter. This is the most time consuming part of the whole recipe, but it’s so worth it. I like mine nice and golden!

Next up boil up the frankfurters in a pot. Frankfurters are actually quite tricky to cook as there’s a fine line between not cooked enough, and the point where the skin pops off of them. The trick is to put them into boiling water, turn them back to simmer, and only let them cook for about 4-5 minutes. I’ll be honest, out of the four I cooked, only one kept it’s skin on. This one was obviously the one that made the photo 😉

I like to brown off the buns a little as it makes them warm and a little crunchy on top. I just  sliced them down the middle and then cooked them upside down in a frypan in a little olive oil.

Lastly, put it all together. Pop a generous helping of the Barkers Mustard Relish on the bun, frankfurter, tomato sauce on top, onions on top of that. Perfect


Other combinations you could try are…

  • Swiss cheese, sauerkraut, and relish
  • Coleslaw – shredded red or green cabbage, grated carrot, sliced spring onion, mung bean or chickpea sprouts + mayonnaise
  • Pickled carrot, coriander, and roughly chopped peanuts
