We Bought A House + Goodbye Dunedin?
Aaah yes you read that title right, we have finally bought a house! I never thought this day would actually come as it’s been a long time in the making! I actually started looking for a house to buy about five years ago. Clearly I’m extremely picky as I never found anything that I actually loved. Nearly two years ago, the boyfriend and I met, so the house hunting went on hold for a while until about 9 months ago when we decided to start looking for a place together. After looking for what feels like ever, we put in an offer on the most perfect house back in August…. and it was accepted! It’s a gorgeous 3 bedroom bungalow, that has huge living and dining rooms, big windows, a massive section, and is so incredibly sunny. It’s also an older style house with beautiful woodwork, so my dreams of a country interior are about to be realised!
Plus…. it’s in the country! Yes, we are moving out of Dunedin and moving to a very small rural town in the Catlins, just over an hour south of Dunedin. I can’t believe I’m going to be living in such a beautiful part of the country. I’ve always wanted to live in a country town, and where we are moving to has only a very few people so it’s perfect. It’s still also really close to Dunedin, so we can still pop up to the city easily to see family and friends, and of course I’ll need some retail therapy every now and then. 😉🛍
I know some people probably think we’re crazy moving somewhere smaller, but for us we think it’s the perfect move. I’ve never wanted to live anywhere big. Many of my friends have moved from Dunedin to places like Auckland or Australia, but personally I couldn’t think of anything worse than living in a massive city. The travel time we have from our new home to Dunedin, is almost the same as what some people do to commute to work in the morning in places like Auckland, and to me that’s crazy! Even Dunedin is becoming busy, especially with the students and tourists in late summer. The traffic can be mental some days, and it’s getting harder and harder to get a park in the city. Where we are moving to has a shop and a cafe, what else do you need, right?
The real estate market is also becoming a lot more expensive in Dunedin. Houses have sky rocketed in price, and while we could have afforded to buy a good house here, we just couldn’t bring ourselves to buy an over priced house at the height of the market. South of Dunedin, the housing prices are more affordable, and we’ve actually bought our house with no mortgage required. It’s such a nice feeling knowing we owe absolutely no money to anyone, and I feel extremely proud to be able to say I purchased my first home with zero mortgage!
The Catlins is such a stunning part of NZ. It’s just a short drive from beaches, waterfalls, and forests, and there are so many walking tracks and bike trails to keep us occupied. We plan on getting a boat, which allows us to go boating and fishing too. The scenery is also extremely stunning and is going to provide a totally gorgeous and completely unique backdrop for all my blog posts! When we were in the Catlins over summer, I took a few photos, which you can see here.
I have some quite grand plans for our new house, including renovating the kitchen, bedrooms, and bathroom so I will be sharing all of that on the blog. We are hoping to get a tonne done before Christmas, and it’s all very exciting! We are going to be decorating with a country theme, I’m going to be having the third bedroom as a study/blogging room/walk in wardrobe. I’m pretty sure this is every bloggers dream, right?
I’m so incredibly excited for this next chapter in our lives and I can’t wait to share it all with you as we officially move in and start to do the place up.
