90’s Fashion Trends: 5 Trends That Are Back!

Oh the 90’s…. a time I look back on and think “what the hell was I wearing?!” I was born in 1989, so I grew up as totally a 90’s kid. It was the time of daggy dressing and bowl cuts, and when I look back on photos of myself back then I can’t help but cringe just a little. I swear kids these days seem so sophisticated, with the cutest little outfits. It’s totally normal to see a kid decked out in skinny jeans and Converse! When I was a kid, it was all about the old comfy clothes – the ones you could play in and get muddy in – and as kids, we loved it!

This year especially, we’ve really seen the 90’s fashion make a major comeback, and I can’t help but laugh at some of the things that are now back in fashion. So many of the current trends take me back to being a kid in the 90’s….

Velvet Everything – This is probably the trend that I find the funniest, as when I was kid I saved up my pocket money as I desperately wanted to buy a crushed velvet top. It was purple, and I clearly remember going into Deka and buying it. I wore and wore that top, until eventually it made it’s way to the back of my wardrobe. I remember pulling it out a few years later and wondering why the hell I had ever worn it as it looked so awful. Now velvet is back in full force, from tops to full blown jumpsuits, and even…. the SCRUNCHIE! How more 90’s can it get than a velvet scrunchie? I can’t help but have a giggle every time I see a fashion website or magazine rave on about how fabulous this trend is!

Dresses Over a T-shirt –  This style was HUGE in the 90’s and it is so funny to see it back. I remember wearing my little pinafores or sun dresses with a t-shirt under them when I was a kid. It’s actually quite a practical way to wear a dress really, especially on a slightly cooler day, but it’s personally a style I will not be wearing again! Slip dresses over tees are popular at the moment, especially when worn over a plain white t-shirt.

Leggings – I’m pretty sure I lived in leggings as a kid, as I don’t really remember owning a pair of jeans until I was in my early teens. It was just leggings and a sweatshirt, and that was my everyday uniform. Leggings were comfy and were perfect for playing in. In the 2000’s we went through the “leggings are not pants” phase, and now here we are at a complete 360. Leggings are now a totally acceptable piece of clothing, and many of us choose to rock the athleisure look with, dare I say it, the leggings and sweatshirt combo. I guess when I was a kid, I was just so incredibly ahead of my time 😂

Denim Pinafores or Overalls – Another trend that was huge in the 90’s was the denim pinafore or the denim overalls (or dungarees). I had both of these when I was a kid, and now both of these have made a massive comeback this year. Both items are so easy to style, with many choosing to opt for either the classic t-shirt, or a lacy bralette under their denim. I’d potentially wear this trend again, if I could find the right piece. Although I feel like denim pinafores look amazing on others, and on me, I’d look about 5!

Choker Necklaces – The choker necklace was the statement piece of jewellery in the 90’s, and I’m pretty sure everyone owned one. I remember going into the dollar store to buy one of those awful plastic choker sets. You know the ones that had the choker AND the matching ring and bracelet? They looked like a tattoo, so of course they were the coolest possible thing you could wear as a kid, and if you could pair it with your crushed velvet top – then even better! Chokers have definitely made a comeback, and I’ve even seen the plastic tattoo chokers making an appearance too!

I am OBSESSED with all of these – although chokers freak me out because I can’t stand anything touching my neck!

I’m the same! I don’t like tight necklaces around my neck as they feel weird and so restricting!

I have to say I’m digging the velvet trend right now and end up wearing way too much of it at once, but who cares right it’ll be off trend soon anyway haha! The rest I’m not so keen on, I agree with you on the fact I’d probably look like 5 again if I wore dungarees…

Some people look so amazing and stylish in dungarees and I don’t know how they do it! Glad to hear you are loving the velvet trend! x
